Japanese Inventions

As i was googling and Youtube-ing about japanese inventions, i saw some really weird stuff! gadgets i never saw before. A lot of inventions never been on the markets, and some japanese guy Kenichi Masuda, collected them and threw an exhibition in Tokyo-Japan to show the people the inventions that didn't make it to be in the market.
Masuda says that the companies at that time had a go-for-it spirit, that's why they didn't care or they were not afraid of failure.
The japanese gadgets of the future, now stuck in the past

Remembering japanese failed inventions :

TOKYO —
It gave us the Walkman, the pocket calculator and heated toilet seats, but Japan’s path to innovative greatness is littered with failures such as the TV-shaped radio and the “walking” toaster.

These and other retro appliances are part of a treasure-trove offering a glimpse of futures that never happened on Japan’s journey to becoming a worldwide byword for invention during the late 1950s and early 1960s.

“Way back before Cool Japan was an Uncool Japan,” said Kenichi Masuda, 49, referencing the marketing slogan Tokyo uses to sell itself at home and abroad.

Masuda has made a life’s work of gathering the also-rans in the race to consumer supremacy.

Witness Iwatsu Electric’s “Both Phone”—two telephones attached back to back with only one receiver, apparently to allow someone to make calls from either side. But only one at a time.

Marvel at Fuji Electric’s double-decked electric fan—the “Silent Pair”, which definitely is a pair, but not exactly silent.

Browsing Masuda’s collection sends the viewer through a portal to a different time, a period when the “three sacred treasures”—the television, refrigerator and washing machine—were status symbols to which all self-respecting housewives in booming Japan would aspire.

But for those who could not afford a real television—Japan’s first domestically-produced set cost the equivalent of three years’ salary for a mid-1950s high school graduate—the next best thing was readily available.

The “Sharp Cinema Super” is a radio in the shape of a television and cost 10,900 yen—a little more than a month’s salary for an elite public servant of the time.

“The delight of having the impression of watching TV would, however, fade quickly with this still screen, ” said Masuda, adding: “I bet the man who bought this was scolded by his wife.”

Panasonic’s television-shaped gas stove GSF-1 is the most expensive model among a range of gas heaters the company sold over 30 years.

“Is there any real meaning in this? No, but this shows how people admired television sets,” he said as he showed AFP the stove, one of the 2,000 items he has amassed over nearly three decades.

Other marvels include the “satellite-type” washing machine—a round metal pod with a handle that stirs dirty laundry in water and detergent.

The product was launched in 1957, amid public excitement over the Soviet Union’s Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite.

Sharp’s “Quicky”—a pair of electric scissors and Toshiba’s prosaically named “CK-31A” electric can opener were both failures.

Hitachi’s “Piano” is a desk-top electric fan that is, for no discernable reason, shaped like a miniature piano and is supposed to emit a gently scented breeze.

Not to be confused with typical hotel “conveyor belt” toasters, Toshiba’s “walking-type toaster” has a slit entrance for the slice of bread, which is then “walked” vertically down inside the toaster on metal rails.

When the toast eventually emerges at the other end, it feels like a major achievement.

“This didn’t sell. There’s no way Japan’s small kitchens had room for a product whose size and price were twice those of common models,” Masuda said.

His personal favourite in this category is Toshiba’s “Snack-3”, a device that can warm milk while toasting a slice of bread and frying an egg.

Would-be consumers might have seen through this one.

“People may have wanted to have Western-Style breakfast at the time… though you would become tired of that fairly quickly,” he said.

For Masuda, these quixotic gadgets show the bravery and idealism of Japanese companies in a high-growth era that was crowned by the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the launch of bullet trains.

“They are adorable. You can see how they came about from companies pouring so much effort in to pleasing customers. It’s just that sometimes, these efforts backfired,” said Masuda.

“But they were serious products made by adults for adults.”

Japanese consumer electronics evolved from this trial-and-error period to sweep the world in the late 20th century—with Sony’s Walkman standing as perhaps the epitome of Nippon Know-how.

But then it all went wrong.

Household names that appeared almost indestructible in the 1980s—Panasonic, Sharp and Sony—are shadows of their former selves, struggling to keep up with their South Korean and Taiwanese rivals.

For Masuda, these companies lost their nimbleness and their playful sense of adventure when they got too large.

“As they grew bigger and bigger, they became mindful of ‘marketing,’ ‘profitability’, ‘safety’ and the like. They may have become too slow to act,” he said.

“But companies in this period were vigorous and had a ‘go-for-it’ spirit. They weren’t afraid of failures.”

So how do they get back to their roots?

That, admits Masuda, has him stumped. “If I knew that, I’d be a company president.”

Cockroach swatting slippers ! thats a nice invention for girls ! LOL!

weird gadget to prevent hair falling in the noodles, ! i think it was used in the 1980's for hippie rockers females from getting hair in their noodles.

Thats a gadget to draw "" perfect '' lips !

Fake breasted feeders for men without wives!

and finally, a privacy gadget :/  ( the techno privacy scarf )
thank god the privacy screen protecter inventor ..

and through my viewing of these old japanese inventions, i realized that japanese inventors did not really care about the shape or how their invention will look like, they only care if it's functioned or not.

Juxtaposition

What is Juxtaposition?

there is a lot of defentions for it, and these are what i found searching the world wide web:
1- Juxtaposition is an act or instance of placing close together or side by side, especially for comparison or contrast.
2- the state of being close together or side by side.
3- Juxtaposition is the act or placement of two things (usually abstract concepts) near each other.

Juxtaposition in mathematics:
adjacency of factors with the absence of an explicit operator in an expression, especially for multiplications.

Juxtaposition in Medical dictionary:
The state of being placed or situated side by side.

Juxtaposition in word origin and history:
1660s, coined in Fr. 17c. from L. juxta "beside, near" + Fr. position(see position (n.)). Latin juxta is a contraction of *jugista (adv.),superlative of adj. *jugos "closely connected," from stem of jugum"yoke," from jungere "to join" (see jugular).

Juxtaposition in Gammer
absence of linking elements in a group of words that are listed together.

Juxtaposition in Arts
contrasting sound or colors.

examples of Juxtaposition

Tank and a toy bike

A good exmple of Juxtaposition because the painting show a strong contrast of race, level, fate and so on.

old style building vs the factory, development and the culture contrast.

Juxtaposition (Granite and steel) by Hideo Furuta

" 'Juxtaposition' is made up of a series of four steel tables and eight hand-carved granite spheres. Fascinated by the relationship between mathematics and Fine Art this work reflects this investigation. The tables and spheres are positioned by applying mathematical theories relating to 'transformation matrices'. The result creates a fascinating experience for the viewer to explore and investigate."

My personal opinion about Juxtaposition:
I think that the Juxtaposition is very important especially in photography, because you get to show two deferent things in one frame, and these two deferent things or objects are the opposite of each other in size, meaning, color, roughness or smoothness, heavy or light and so on.

The PC is dead along live the tablet!

As we can see in our generation, every electronic device is smaller than it's previous. like computers, people used to sit in front of this big white box screen that they share with the whole family, and do there thing with it.
As Technology moved on and on, computer screens got thiner and thiner, HD and plasma screens, full of colors and sharp. Laptops, notebooks, going smaller and thinner,On 2010 apple released the first tablet ( 1st generation). A touch screen, just a screen, combining what a mobile and a PC can do. Games, all kind of apps and many many utilities. with this breakthrough invention, people left their PC's and started using these tablets, weather you are a teacher, doctor, student and even a baby! you can use the tablet. The companies that manufactures these portable devices, thinks that by 2016, the computers will be replaced by the tablets in most companies. “In 2016, two-thirds of the mobile workforce will own a smartphone, and 40 per cent of the workforce will be mobile,” said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner.

inventions and innovations 2

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-20071644

This link is from the BBC news magazine article talking about some Australian great inventions by Phill Mercer.

After reading this article, i realized that inspiration come from many things, and many ways, like tragedies ! or even a beach vacations! like Dr Graeme Clark who was inspired by a seashell and invented the cochlear implant, and with that invention he changed the life's thousands of people with hearing disabilities.

Dr Graeme Clark

So what is creativity? and how to be creative and innovative?
there is many definitions for those two words, and best and closest meaning for them is to create something acceptable and useful socially.

Dr Ali Alhammadi

There is also another definition from Dr Ali Alhammadi from his book ''سلسة الابداع" (the chain of creativity), ''creativity is a combination of flexible science fiction, to develop and old idea, or to find a new one, no matter how small the idea is, an unfamiliar result comes out of it, that can be applied and used.

people thinks that a human is born creative, and being innovative is limited on experts and scientist! which is not true, it's an art that can be learned and practiced by any person, except those who don't believe in them selves.

Creative and innovative people always look for ways and alternative solutions and never stay on one solution, they have strong will and patience, clear goals, ignorant for the bad comments and criticism, always positive and optimistic, and the most important thing is that they are not afraid of failure! All those qualities are acquired while growing up, it does not come with a package when you are born.

Here is some videos i saw through youtub-ing about creativity:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRmifpeZO18&feature=youtu.be

Creativity and DIFFERENT:
Creative thinkers must think of a new and exciting ways to grap people's attention everyday. like the video above, these guys found a way to make more people use the stairs instead of the electrical stairs because its fun! and it is something new.
/
/

Creativity and TIME:
i loved what they did here, approving that creativity needs time, the more time you spend on a work, the better it turns to be!

/
/

Creativity and PASSION:

This video too, sometimes we need something to motivate us, to produce such an art work for someone that we really care about.

Thinking reversely, Thinking Upside down
How can we be innovative? we think creatively, we think backwards! turning what we see in our lives up side down to get new ideas. In education for instance, students go to school to learn, and when you reverse it you say school comes to students, and that what happened nowadays due to the evolution of internet and education and its availability in every house.

Imagine
imagine that you became the education minister, what is the first thing you would do? imagine that you live under water, how could you survive and how is you life going to be? always carry on a note book and write any idea u get!

and the most important thing is to keep in mind that everything is POSSIBLE.

The Ted Talk. Sir Ken Robinson: do schools kill creativity?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG9CE55wbtY

After watching the ted talk, sir Ken Robinson: school kills creativity, it inspired me to peruse my dream and improve what i'm good at no matter what people think of it. As long as i want it so bad, i should work on making it real!
and about the school part, he is right in every word he said, students now feel forced to learn, there is not any encouragement or motivation to learn, they just have to attend the classes and fall a sleep because of the boring methods of teaching! the teacher comes in, writes half of the lesson on the bored with starting any discussion with the students to make them think and have fun in class.
Talents now days are considered as waste of time and the person should be focusing on education only! that killed a lot of talents and creativity, making life plain and boring without anything to add some spice and sparkle to it.

words associated with creativity

creativity is made with two words, create and activity
the opposite of create is destroy.
so the opposite of creativity is destructively.

Creativity is defined as :
1- (NEW) generate new ideas and thoughts
2- (UNIQUE) creating something unique
3- ( DIFFERENT) think differently
4- ( PASSIONATE) motivate feelings and expressions
5- (ORIGINAL) make your work one and only!

Creativity is bringing new ideas on the table, thinking out side the box. it's combining beauty and science, it's originality!
being creative means you have to produce useful and unique thoughts, different ways and steps. work hard to make it real, try to find the problems in your object of creativity and get its solutions. It's like drawing a paint, imagining how it's going to be, start drawing it, look for what colors to apply on the canvas and giving the final touches that will make it look better.

words not associated to creativity:
1- PLAIN. something not more than the usual.
2- BORING. makes you look away fast and never pulls u towards it.
3- REPETITIVE . something you see daily.

why did the titanic hit the iceberg?

Titanic, the unsinkable ship. A luxurious British passenger liner that turned into one of the most famous tragedies of our time.

On april 10th,1912, the Titanic set sail on it's first voyage, sailing from England to New York City. At many times of the journey, the radio operator of the Titanic received many alerts about icebergs, most of the warnings were passed to the ship's bridge. Edward Smith, the ship's captain, slightly altered the ships course to avoid these icebergs.

April 14th, warnings were sent from the other ships to the Titanic about icebergs. Those messages were never passed to the bridge, Some of the crew members sure that nothing can stop this ship.
At 10:55 pm, a ship near by sent a word to the Titanic that it stopped due to the icebergs in the area. Philips, who was responsible about the passengers massages, repaved the ship for interrupting him. At that night the Titanic lookouts said that the ocean was unusually calm that night.

Near Canada, the iceberg was sighted, and the bridge was notified. First, the captain turned the ship left, but it was too close to avoid the impact. While the ship was turning, the iceberg hit the left side of the ship and that lead the water into the compartments, bringing the ship deeper to the ocean. That determined the ships fate.

Many experts said that the ship would have survived if it hit the iceberg head-on. They said ''nothing can stop this ship'' well, an iceberg did. I think that no matter how hard a human built something so powerful, gods power is always bigger.
